What’s In A Name? A Scene Name

It is a bit of a BDSM tradition to choose a scene name or have one given to you by a dominant other.

In the BDSM community, most people will use a variation of a scene name. Scene names are aliases or false names that people use at events, dungeons or online. These are not screen names such as tortunelover10, but a name people refer to you as. A scene name is generally not associated with your real name.

Why Use A Scene Name?

A scene name is in no way a requirement. Many kinks use scene names to separate their BDSM life from their vanilla lives. In particular for privacy, if you lead a high powered job or work with the public in the vanilla world. In long-term relationships or marriages, a scene name creates a distinction between your alpha alias and your husband or wife. It is also used for couples to get into the BDSM mindset or character they portray.

There are different times that kinks use a scene name, for everyone it is different. Firstly, you do not have to have one scene name. You can have multiple characters to play. For example, you may use a scene name online but not in your local BDSM community, separating these two aspects of your life. Another reason is to keep your identity secure online. Others will have multiple scene names for various aspects of their BDSM life. For example, a different name for The Adult Hub, dungeons, munches and in your intimate relationships.

How To Pick A Name

Picking a scene name can be fun and can choose from unlimited options. However, a good name for you may not be the same for others. One option is to select a name that represents who you want to be in the community. If you are a powerful, extroverted, dominant male, Oden may be a good fit. If you are a warrior princess at the feet of Hercules, then Aria is an option. If you do not know who you are in the community or who you want to be, try choosing a name you like. Choose a name inspired by your favourite actor or a character from a book or tv series. It does not have to be a real name and can be unusual, try making one up!

You will be using these scene names a lot in your kink life. Another option is to choose a name that sounds natural or reflects your real name. It could be your middle name or something that begins with the same sound as your real name. Say in the vanilla world you are called Andy your scene name could be Andreas. Particularly, if you are new to the community, a name that is similar to your own may invoke a natural response. It can make it easier for you to identify with, in the beginning.

If you are starting in the online BDSM community but think you might want to merge with your real life, choosing a name you feel comfortable being called in person is always a good idea. For example, the scene name Dragon Balls may feel awkward when a partner or friend says it aloud in social situations. Another option is using a version of your real name in another language. If you decide to go down this route, make sure you can pronounce it correctly and try not to pick something difficult for others to pronounce. It does not have to be a name you translate, it can be a word or phrase. Many submissives use the name Ancilla, Latin for "slave". Google translate is a great tool to play around with to find a mysterious or unusual name.

Names To Avoid

Scene names to avoid in the BDSM community are names where a power exchange dynamic is implied, for example, mistress or master. Fo some in the community, these terms are sacred and should only be used by their submissive or dominant. It can be uncomfortable for those who do not want to use those terms outside their intimate relationships. The other thing to avoid is explicit or swear words. It is important for when, or if, your vanilla life overlaps with your BDSM life. You do not want someone calling you Susan Slut in the supermarket.

There are very few opportunities in life to name yourself, so have fun with it. It may take time to find the scene name that you are happy with. Play around with different names, in different situations and remember nothing is set in stone and you can change your scene name whenever you want.
